I am new to this.

Want to build my own wheels with drum brakes (Sturmey Archer)

Hearing lots of horror stories about 12 gauge spoke being very brittle this days due to the metal being used.

With a 36 hole rim and being a 29 inch tire .... the drum brake will make the spokes shorter because of the drum size (70 to 90mm).

I thought 12 gauge would be better for a drum brake instead of 14 gauge.

But, not sure ....

never heard of 12g being brittle. i've used new ones and have never broken any spokes on dozens of wheels.

most likely, you'll have to drill the hub for the spokes to fit. it's easy and common practice.

for the correct length, google "spoke length calculator."
