So I'm thinking the lesson learned is that air intake WAS the culprit, and crankcase ventilation specifically was the problem... doesn't seem that the PCV would make that much difference though... would then adding a small filter to the PCV hose help or hurt engine performance... somethings' fishy...
It IS safe to say that cleaning the fuel system helped. I'll stick with that.
I'd recommend making your own air intake to anyone. Got a bunch of suggestions right in this thread! It's a fun project where you're bound to learn something, and when your done you can say; "The engine came as a kit, but I built that custom breather".
