Well the time has come for my final gas power build on a Helmutt frame, it will be powered by a Briggs Raptor thats been spiced up a bit. Show & Go is the plan.

A little history on the 2011 Excelsior:

"Ignaz Schwinn was an American success story. Born in 1860 in Baden, Germany, he began work as a machinist at the Kleyer bicycle works and gradually rose to factory manager and designer. In 1891 he emigrated to Chicago where he continued working in the bicycle trade. He was industrious and attracted the attention of a wealthy Chicago financier, Adolph Arnold, and the pair set out in business as Arnold, Schwinn & Co. Within a few years (1911), they were building 100,000 bicycles per year and fielded a team of bicycle racers to promote their brand. Schwinn was a wealthy man by 1911, and decided to add motorcycling to his portfolio, purchasing the struggling Excelsior Auto Cycle company.
Just as with his bicycles, Schwinn understood that racing success was the best form of advertising, and he backed special racing machines with professional riders, like Jake DeRosier, Charles Balke, and Don Johns. Schwinn’s limited production of racing specials were highly successful, reaching speeds in excess of 100 MPH in competition. The Excelsior Auto Cycle Co. had introduced a V-twin in 1910, with an F-head engine of 820cc and mechanical inlet valves, and a gear-driven magneto. The engine was enlarged to a full 61 cu-in. (1000cc) the following year. In 1912, Lee Humiston took his Excelsior V-twin to L.A.’s Playa del Mar board track, and became the first man in America to travel at 100 MPH".

This sounds sexy... Love those Phoenix / Helmut frames. AND should be perfect for a Excelsior build. Sure you don't wanna go V Twin for your last gasser?:D

I have had this build planned and was waiting for the frames to arrive, the frame is only made in limited supply and really like what Richard is doing so why not support it. Over the years of building bikes I know what works and don't compromise on the parts I chose: Sportsman Flyer is one of my first choices as is AGK, ARC, Bully clutches, and DGE for the rear hub. Felt wheels are my choice these days for the look and quality, other bikes I have built use the Felt forks and bars. A couple pictures attached.

NOTE: look at those welds... #weldporn

Hey Jeff,

I'm very happy to see that Briggs sitting in the frame. When you say last gas powered Helmutt frame, are you saying your last gas powered bike with any frame? I see that you have been having fun with the electric bikes.

I would have to say yes, last gas powered bike for me, it will be special and a keeper. Right now I have 5 gas powered bikes (love them) that I don't really ride since building the ebike (2). The ebike is my transportation to and from work, don't wake up the neighbors and enjoy the power. Don't get me wrong, I plan to ride this bike with you and others and maybe be ready for this years born free event.

The 'WOLF' on the reduction shaft plate is a nice touch! (^)

I don't believe that this is your last gas bike... You'll have even better plans after this one! ;)

DANG BOY! You work FAST! NOW... I have a few questions. Whats going on with the front fork? That a shock I'm seeing? ( nice rear suspension by the way :) ) Also; why not going with the SCP reduction. Not that I don't like the jackshaft but the SCP bit is so much more vintegistic.

Hey Velodrome that fork has a: Damping-system with adjustments for rebound, compression, preload and high pressure. Works great!

The other question, yes it will have the reduction drive from Pat installed, no ther way to go thats for sure.

Well I have been knocked out with this bug that's going around, miss working on the bike. Today I stayed home from my day job and got some good rest, the meds are kicking in now and I am starting to feel better. I have parts to make and others are on the way. Billet flywheel and adjustable timing will be added to the Briggs, new intake manifold will be made to add the Mikuni, the exhaust will need some work to clear the frame. Excited about this bike build, maybe the fact I have said its my last MB build...who knows

The pictures:

Decided to do my own seat thing, got a good kick on the back to keep me out of the back wheel...lol

Dead man kill switch: required for Jr. Dragsters, the motor did come from one of those rides

The exhaust make over

The intake, may end up with a round slide 22 mm Mikuni

Looking good Jeff. I am very excited about this build. Do you have a color scheme in mind? Or are you sticking with raw metal?

ONE thing I have learned in life is Never say Never.
Buba never said never ever...laff

Norm, the seat pan I have is the smaller version, goes well with the frame size.

Gilbert, black frame and tank, polished aluminum and some of the metal parts will be chromed. Nice painted logo on the side of the tank.

The more I look at this flathead the more I like it...simple

Thanks for the follow SB

Well I could not leave it alone, no hours on this motor by the way it looks. Have an ARC billet head on the way, now to pick the Dyno cam and do some mild clean up porting. I guess I need that billet rod now...so much for not getting carried away.

My dog is not helping too much either...Party animal
