I intended to take more pictures, but this just came together so fast I'll have to quickly explain it.
I removed the gear lever cover, the lever sticks straight up. I happened to have a small spring, approximately 1/8" diameter, 1/2" long, too strong to compress in my fingers. I put the spring inside the cover- pressed against the lever, by carefully using my third hand:) This permanently engaged the gearbox. The spring fit snugly over the clutch cable end, which sticks thru the lever, holding it centered.
The picture is the cut end of the original clutch cable... looking for a nice end clip to finish it off.

Sorry! Forgot to mention: This is a stage 3 gearbox attatched to a 49cc 4stroke.
