this is what i would do drill the heads off the stripped screws off then slip off the rest of the cover take visegrips or if your hulk pliers and back out those screws then simply replace the cover and screws

Fixed!

Brought some scrap steel metal I had in my closet from a project down to a bicycle repair co-op (that means it's work trade ie. "free") here in Seattle did some drilling and filing and bolting together.. I think it works better than the original.
So losing control was obviously the right thing to do.

Now all you need is to stick a wad of bubble gum on it and add some bailing wire/duct tape and you will have a work of beauty :)
