This may or may not be a silly question. Can any type of sprocket be used on the rim as long the chain works properly on it and the drive sprocket? Or should I order on-line from a supplier for bike engines? I've been thinking of keeping a spare around and have it ready so I just have to change wheels in case I end up with broken spokes.

If you are running the stock rag joint set up you should order a nine hole kit type sprocket.
^^This. Bolt pattern must match the stock ragjoint.
Pick up a 36 tooth and try it.
Better cruising with lower vibes and rpm and/or slightly better top speed.
