i have a 2 stroke 48cc engine, the model is Starfire Gen II . I would like to get a performance Spark plug rather then my original plug. What should i be looking for to make sure its the correct plug? Does it just have to be for 50cc motors or does a specific size, model etc matter?

I got the NGK BP6hs for 1.99 since eveyone is talking about them! I figure thats the best performance one but for the price you wouldnt think that. They dont have Iridium plugs for 50cc motors? that would make a bike real fast.

best spark plug to me is one that is cheap and works champion L78C or the china until it craps the bed then it takes a dirt nap.

If you use the stock CDI with a Iridium IX (BPR6HIX), It will be a VERY noticeable improvement over a standard plug. .shft.

The engine has a slightly higher Idle RPM and doesn't misfire as much. If you ask me, it's worth the money because the plugs have a longer service life than the standard plugs, they won't foul up easily either, which means easier starts. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

ngk all the way...
I am no authority on spark plugs, but here's my experience thus far...

Yep, you can never go wrong with NGK Plugs. I'd like to try the Denso Iridium Power plug (like NGK Iridium IX only with a u-Groove on the tapered ground electrode and a 0.4mm center electrode) Just for the heck of it.

Champion plugs are good too (I've read that most of the indy car or F1 racers use them, standard equipment on most power lawn tools) , but it would be hard to beat the NGK, because they are #1 in spark plug advancements and quality in my opinion.

Be careful with some of the Autolite plugs (sometimes made by the lowest bidder in China), they have an outdated numbering system (not as detailed as NGK, Bosch or Champion), but they will work just fine on these engines.

I haven't tried the Standard Bosch plugs, but I have tried their Platinum +2 and +4 plugs on my car and they didn't work well with my ignition system(that doesn't mean that they wouldn't work well on other applications though).

Oh well...that's about all I know(not too terribly much LOL), but have fun out there and give every plug a fair shot or two and see what works best.

i just ordered a BR6HIX plug on ebay because its hard to get in aus i'll let you's know how it goes when i get it.
Let us know - we are interested in carrying this plug at the lowest price we can squeeze out, but need more feedback. I haven't even tried it yet. What engine and what tuning mods do you have?

I tried a BPR6HS yesterday with a gap of .020 and the engine didn't like it much...
Interesting. I wonder if it's the "R" (resistor)? . What engine and what tuning mods do you have?

Good thread!!!

Yea Pablo it's a resistor type...Canadian Tire, where I bought it yesterday, stocks mostly resistor type plugs because of some ruling the CRTC made up here years ago with regards to radio interference. I can get the non R's from my local cycle shop but they were closed yesterday. I was thinking of going out today and getting a 5, 7, 8 and 9 heat in the BP series just so I could try them all when it stops raining. After looking at the BPR6 again, recalling how it ran and thinking about how well our high strung BZM's like an 8 or 9 heat I'm betting my engine might like an 8 or 9. With the BPR6 my engine felt lazy everywhere, color was good as you'll see in the pics but it just didn't feel right...it was almost as if I had retarded the timing a little. Kinda makes sense though I guess that it felt like I retarded the timing a little because if the BPR6 holds it's heat better than the stock plug combustion chamber temps would have went up which in effect alters the ignition point of the fuel\air mixture ever so slightly. I didn't have my temp gun with me so I couldn't actually take a CHT reading so as to know for sure if combustion temps went up...next test day I will carry it with me.

First pic is the BPR6HS and the other is the stock plug. My needle clip is second from the top and this engine is unmodified. Fuel is 87 octane pump gas mixed at 25:1 with Klotz R50.

Edit: After looking quickly at this color chart the BPR6 might have actually started to glaze over which indicates a combustion chamber temperature rise....still hard to tell though with out a temp reading.
