Have any of you ever have to weld the clutchbell to the supporting inner bolt nut, on a 4 stroke with a JL Hoot gearbox? Is this common w/ the Hoots?

I'm just guessing that it is a somewhat common problem.

Well not necessarily the Hoot clutch bell, but clutch bells of equal cheapness. They are made about as cheap as they can make them and eventually the heat and torque just take their toll on them. Normally the cheap weld will give way, but usually its the cheap metal that they're made of that snaps.

With all of that said, yes you can weld them back up, but the biggest problem is getting them exactly centered and straight as the heat tend to warp them from the welding. Good luck....it's pretty hit and miss unless you have a jig and a real good welder.

It's generally cheaper and easier just to buy a new one....as much as I hate to say it.

Hey skyhawk3184, welcome to the forum (^) That depends on the clutch bell.....is it out of a Hoot, a 4G or something else? The bells can have different size shafts and that is the thing that makes things tricky. If it's a 4g, Dave's Discount Motors has a bell that is a direct replacement but much beefier and of higher quality. If it's a hoot clutch bell, I'm not sure of the shaft size but Boy Go Fast on eBay would prolly have a replacement bell of that type.

Hope this helps and let us know how you go with this little prob,

Hi,
I have boxes & boxes & boxes of the "hoot" gear drive systems. I will sell them CHEAP!!!!. They are all NEW, nerver used, simply removed from the motors to install the Q-Matic drive.

It think it is a total waste of time trying to make them work correcty, but with hundreds of spare parts, maybe you could ride it a few miles between changing parts. Some are better made than others, and may last longer, maybe selecting the best parts from an assortment of "hoot" drives will make them last longer, who knows.

How about $25.00 each and get one free? OK! how about $25.00 each and two free?

If ya want to play around, weld, machine, re-design, upgrade, this offer is for you!

Sure would like to reclaim the shelf space they currently occupy.

Have fun,

sounds great, If you have the newer JL hoot gearbox, Id buy some clutch bells from you. Buy one, get one free?

If you could post a pic up of the clutch bells, Id defiantly buy some.

Will only sell complete units, I need the space and only removing parts from the box won't help. Most likely you will need some of the parts later, as the entire system isn't the highest quality anyway.

The systems are "J L Hoot" and are gear drive, as I understand the later units were single and double chain drives in the place of gears.

These are the units refered to as the figure 8 covers.

If interested:
email me at [email protected] and I will take pictures and send them via return email.

$25.00 plus shipping for 3 complete drives [$8.3333333 each].

Have fun,
