sounds like you may have a fatter than usual engine sprocket ..or a tight fitting chain
it is possible that your chain is bunching , when its off wiggle each & every link ..if it feels slightly stiff ,or if you feel or hear crunchy stiffness.it might need more lube worked into it
also lay it out straight & check for bent plates ..& spiraling
as you may know these engines are famous for quality issues , i hope it isnt a sprocket problem ..if you can actually get it on there , it may just wear in in time
