Old gal at her wits end with clutch issue

Hi, 100% newbie who thinks she has lost her mind. Convinced my husband to get bikes & some engines, it will be fun... that was almost 4 weeks ago & still no go.
I think I have resolved every other issue but I can't get this clutch working.

Have been working with a mechanic via phone calls to get us going but it's hit & miss when we connect.
The clutch plate was stuck, lossened flower nut & removed plate & spring, cleaned all the crud in between all the pads, greased the gear (per instructions) then found the little notches in the spring & I think we tightened it ... while trying to get bike going the chain slipped (my fault too sloppy) then the clutch was suddenly really stiff & now I can't get the cover by the arm back on right like that bar is sticking out (that's been greased too & yes the ball bearing is in there)

The actuator arm just keeps swinging outward & if i line everything up & put the bolts back in the actuator arm is super stiff & no way the clutch lever on the handlebars would take the tension.

Sorry for being so wordy but i have spent weeks here looking & see "need more info"

Please save my marriage lol .... i only know these engine terms from weeks of researching answers... i truly have no clue otherwise.

Through small adjustments of the spring & then slowly adjusting the clutch everything lined up. Mechanic friend had me put cover back on with actuator arm lined up & slowly screw back in, then we did the spring & flower nut, the bar must have popped back into position.
And have left alone now as instructed

I guess what I was doing when adjusting that spring was like like a light switch, was rolling the bike a few feet to disengage the clutch where I actually needed to roll inches, when my screw driver was starting to twist & feel like it would break my mechanic friend had me stop, adjust the flower nut... it worked.
Lesson learned about small adjustments on that internal spring.
