New Engine Woes

Hey guys,

A buddy and I just purchased replacement motors, his works like a dream, while mine seems to start, and then all of a sudden cuts off and I have to peddle to get the same, short result. It wants to kick over more, I can hear it, and it does kick over but only momentarily. All the wiring is correct, all the remaining parts worked on the old engine no problem. I have no idea what is going on, and it makes a weird rubbing noise, like the piston is rubbing or perhaps the clutch is slipping.

Any ideas? I've looked at previous threads, but nothing seems similar to what I am encountering.

You're going to have to be more specific about what you've tried.
Have you confirmed that you have the three things necessary for an internal combustion engine to run?

Air, Fuel and Ignition?

Give us a little information and we'll try to help.

Is your choke stuck closed even though your handle goes up and down? Confirm by removing air filter and inspect. Fresh Gas? Chinese spark plug?

Sorry for the delay guys

I decided to take a more aggressive route and bought a new CDI and carb (stock NT) just to rule out jets, spark, etc. and it started to run nicely. (and to answer the last questions: the choke was fine and I had installed an NGK Iridium plug with fresh fuel)

Except

When I Get it going and put it in neutral it revs so high it feels like the engine is going to vibrate right off the frame. In fact, when I ran it last night, I threw the chain and lost my master link. It's very strange. It's unfortunate, it felt like everything was running right for once.

Does the throttle slide go all the way down when you let off the throttle?
Is the throttle cable routed so there are no sharp bends or kinks?
Have you tried adjusting the idle speed screw?
Are there any air leaks?

I'll have to check when I get home from work to make sure, but the cable feels as if its moving freely, and I don't think there are any kinks. I have to check the throttle slide. As for leaks, I tightened my exhaust and intake and tightened the head just a wee bit just to make sure.

Try the idle speed screw first. If that has little effect, check for air leaks around the carb and manifold. Tightening the mounting hardware a little more does nothing for poorly manufactured gasket surfaces and cheap, low quality gaskets that are known to leak straight out of the box.
