Default Trek 850

Is this a good bike for a first build?..........steel, standard size tubing with index shifting and no suspension. I also have a Schwinn Ridge which is the larger size aluminum tubing, grip shift, with front suspension. Which is best?

I google trek850, from what I seen that bike will be perfect. The shwinn I saw different ones, some looked like it would work others dont. And everybody says to stay away from aluminum, yet to this day I have yet to see one fail.

Here is a link for you that will give you the frame dimensions needed.
