BMS overheated & almost started a fire!

Well I thought I could ride w/o a working BMS (leds) doesn't light up anymore on my 48v 15 Ah LifePo4 Battery Pack Took a 8 mile ride. When I got home I smelled something melting/burning. It was the BMS that overheated and started melting the bike bag I had it in. I quickly took the battery out of the bag and threw it in the garden thinking it would explode. Nothing happened but it sure gave me a scare. I've had the battery a over 4 years and purchased it from Ping. Emailed Ping and he responded the next day. Luckily he has an updated BMS with a heavy duty heat sink. Just have to wait for it to arrive from China.

You're lucky there was no fire. Hopefully, the new V5 BMS from Ping will fix it.

maybe you can get another year out of it. Maybe not. Sounds like you might need a new battery pack now.

I've got my fingers crossed. Sure hate to spend several hundred bucks on a new one. Especially when the battery costs more than the bike and all the misc. stuff and gadgets I've added to it over the years.
