Default Chain idler question

Is it absolutely necessary to install the chain idler? I have my whole motor installed with chain but I forgot to put the chain idler on and the chain has 1/2-3/4 inch deflection. Thanks

I don't use a chain tensioner/idler. Though I do have the alignment almost perfect between engine and wheel sprockets.

I only recommend using no tensioner/idler though if you have horizontal dropouts and a dérailleur to tension the pedal side.
