Default Backlash question

Can anyone tell me what the backlash should be between the flywheel gear and the drive gear? Is this adjusted by shimming? My newest build is howling a little and the backlash appears to be maybe .001 at best.
Thanks, Evan

Where do you think you can shim it?

Not sure....thats why I ask. Some gearsets on machines accomplish this by shimming behind one of the gears. If the teeth are at any sort of an angle removing or adding shims behind the gear would work.

Shimming works on helical cut gears, not straight cut ones like the ones in a Chinese 2 stroke. Helical gears have rounded surfaces that when properly spaced or positioned to each other relative to the curvature of the gear tooth will run quieter and more effeciently. Straight, or square cut gears mesh at the same angle so shimming either the drive or driven gear in or out will not have any effect on gear mesh only the amount of surface contact. Hence no noise reduction. This is an over simplication of gear engineering but I hope it answers your question.

At the factory I think they set it to 1/8 the diameter of a piece of rice.

Slap some good grease on the teeth and it will help.
