Default Rack 'em up

A few weeks ago I found a kiddie carrier by the dumpster and was about to toss it in when I discovered the seat was attached to what basically amounted to a plastic fender rack so I took it off and saved it for the future.

The more I looked at it the more I didn't like the idea of installing a plastic rack on my cruiser. I had a white oak 1 x 6 plank laying around and after a few minutes on the table saw I had all my basic parts, 6 slats @ 3/8 x 3/4 x 18 and 4 spreaders 3/4 x 3/4 x 6.

After a couple of hours worth of sanding, the brad tacker and some measurements I'm at this point. Now I just need to pick up some stain (gotta decide on what shade) and some poly to finish it.

Well it's stained, Minwax Golden Oak. Really brought out the grain, too bad I have to wait 8 hours to cover it in polyurethane. Oh well there's always tomorrow.

Nice wood. My nephew is into making wood boxes. Give me an idea to let him loose on a rack for one of my bikes.

Bike is not too shabby either.

3 coats of acrylic later. I decided to polish up the lights and shoot them with three coats of clear too.

Love it! I'll have to look around for some wood in my garage.
