Chain tensioner?

I am getting ready for a new build or a rebuild using parts off
my Schwinn ( frame cracked ) and installing them on a Dyno.

I have seen people use skateboard wheels used as chain tensioners,
do they hold up well? is there a brand that holds up better?
or what do you use that holds up well?

Skate board wheels work well IF you get the right one. Some of the cheaper ones are two layers. There is a soft rubbery material laminated over a hard plastic core. Stay away from those. The reason is when you try to cut the groove for the chain the outer layer will come off and apart, like a retread truck tire.

Look for a one piece wheel, preferably a polyurathane style. You can also look at industrial suppliers and check though their selection of caster wheels. I made a tensioner from an elevator guide wheel.

Be aware most skateboard wheels are wider than the stock idler and may not fit certain builds.They also require a correctly sized shoulder bolt or the bearings will bind when you tighten it up. I could not use the one I ordered precut so be sure you have enough room.
