George, you'll get many opinions on break-in fuel/oil ratios. It has been discussed a lot here. Your 24:1 mix will be just fine as well as if you go down to 32:1. You'll need to decide what works best for you. It's good that you're not doing the kit recommended 16:1. It is generally felt that it is too much oil and offers no benefits.

Nobody is going to laugh at you about that. There isn't one of us who hasn't made the same kind of mistake at one time or another.

If it makes you feel any better I've seen photos of the carburetor installed upside down and the problem was described as "a fuel leak"
