Right on all counts. The maker was NSU, an old German company that made bicycles, motorcycles and cars and from 1930s to the mid 1950s was the largest producer of motorcycles in the world. They were bought by VW in the early 1960's.

Thanks, H.V.! I believe you are spot on.
I had no idea that firm was the largest motorcycle producer in the world during that period.
Certainly stands to reason though in light of the fact that virtually all manufacturing and refining on the continent was reduced to rubble by the allied air forces.
There of course would have been an emphasis on vehicles that required very little raw materials to produce and got the most out of the fuel they used which must have been rationed for several years at least following the war.
