I bought some nice 1/4 id fuel line and it slipped right off the carburetor, and barely fit the petcock.

What size is the stock fuel line, since it seems to fit better

5/32 or 3/16 is what I use, is according to what the local stores have at the time.
Ditto: Check a local hobby shop. If they cater to the giant scale radio control airplane crowd they will have silicone fuel line in either 5/32" or 3/16". You'll never need to replace it.
Otherwise check the small engine or lawn mower section of a hardware or auto parts store. It won't be silicone tubing but at least it will fit.
1/4" is too big.
