Cracked Intake Manifold

I just installed a new motor from BGF. It replaced the Grubee that I first bought which lasted all of 39 miles before blowing a piston.

While swapping out the motors I noticed that the intake manifold (on the Grubee) had a crack in it about half way around the pipe where it meets the flange. So I used the intake manifold that came on the new motor.

The new motor started easier and ran better than the Grubee ever did. After about 10 miles (50 minutes) of continuous running I checked the spark plug and it was a nice chocolate brown. This same plug was in the Grubee and it was all white in it--I guess it was running very lean.

Anyway, could a cracked intake manifold have caused a super lean condition which in turn cooked the piston?
