Well, you know, you bring up a good point, pre-ignition could be caused by a spark plug electrode getting too hot. I had that happen to me once, and it caused the crank pin to split in two! I guess that would be similar to what you described happen to your go kart being advanced too much. The other way havoc is unleashed upon these engines is if they run too hot, there is the likely hood of detonation, or like if the compression is too high.
Maybe that's why they put out the GT-5 engine; it has such low compression, it helped with detonation problems. Well, once again, the stock cylinder head limits the output the engine is capable of producing.
When it comes to ignition, I certainly think that modifying it can help. There are some on this forum who know a lot about modifying the ignition on these engines. In the recent past, I have run a CDI unit from a scooter with a different coil, and liked the performance better than the stock ignition.
