Do gears matter?

I have a 3 speed with a 26 cc friction engine. Does it matter what gear I'm in when I ride? Will I get better performance in one gear rather than the other?

Doesn't really matter unless you're pedaling all the time.

If the motor was attached to the rear hub sprocket, then your gear selection would make a difference. But since your setup is driving the wheel and not the hub, the gear selection only affects pedaling.
