My wheels, especially the rear wheel are pretty far out of balance. Is there an easy way for me to balance them with minimal resources as far as bike knowledge and tools are concerned? Or is this something I will have to have done by a bike shop?

Try reading this article: Truing Wheels

You can get a spoke wrench for less than 5 bucks. You can also take both chains off of the bike and raise the bike off of the ground so you can spin the wheel freely.

Article + spoke wrench + freely spinning wheel = true wheels

I use solder and wrap the spokes to balance the wheels, it helps A LOT. Also, if you want to spend the money, buy stick on golf club weights.

i think Joe's crazy when he says balancing his wheels helps, but then again, i've never ridden his bikes...;)

true-ing them, on the other hand, is something everyone should learn. it's great if you can fix your own wobbles without having to take it to the bike shop alla time.
