Busted chain

Hey Guys!
I am a newb who just finished my build, and I got the engine to start, went 20 feet and the chain broke????? It appeared to have derailed, and then got caught in the sprocket nuts, and broke into several pieces.

So.... Did I have the chain too loose, too tight or just right and it screwed up anyway??

It appears the tire is a bit too wide, and the chain is rubbing on the rear tire.
I bought a 1.75" tire to replace the 2.25" tire.

Any advice will be appreciated!!!

Here's some reading for you.
Proper chain alignment and tension are critical. The drive and driven sprockets (engine and rear wheel) must be in an absolutely straight line. The tensioner wheel must also align with the chain path. The rear, driven sprocket, must be centered on the rear wheel hub. Any misalignment or out of concentricity will cause you problems.
Roller chains will perform perfectly if properly aligned and tensioned.
The kit supplied chain has a bad reputation but even it will serve you well if properly installed.

If the chain was rubbing the tire, why did you ride it?

Thanks! I will double check the alignment when I get the new chain.

I rode it because it was lightly rubbing on the tire, not being deflected by it.

I will try a thinner tire when the new chain comes.

That's what I did, got a thinner tire.

Never ride a bike that has a chain rub anywhere, it's dangerous.
