Hi! I'm new to the forum and motorized bicycles but I've been really interested in making one for a while now but I'm still in the beginning stages, don't even have a bike yet. I found this AMF Skyrider on craigslist for $40 Which is so far the lowest price I can find in my area. Only problem is it looks to be coaster brakes and the guy says the back wheel needs to be trued.

If anyone has any tips, comments, or concerns as to whether or not the bike is a good or bad deal, sturdy enough, or worth the hassle of installing new brakes Id really appreciate anything as I'm by no means an expert or even knowledgeable in bicycles, I do however like a good project and tinkering.

Thanks,

Dave

also if not obvious by the post being about a $40 bicycle, I don't really have a ton of money to work with but need something to get me to and from an internship, 7 miles each way. (don't worry, the people there are really nice so if the bike has issues some mornings they won't be upset, it'd just mean i stay later, they already know I take the bus then walk 30 mins after the nearest bus stop so honestly anything is better.)

First off I want to welcome you to the best MB forum I could find. Not only do we have a wide range of knowledgeable members, but also and the most active, should you have questions, the response time is really fast.

We have numerous “stickies” that cover just about any aspect on all MB’s, along with a “SEARCH” function. Although at times it isn’t the easiest to use. This is due to that the title of the post that isn’t specific enough. Posting titles like “Help” doesn’t help others doing a search, and I and others tend to pass them up at times, only going back a later time, which makes an answer longer to get.

Should you have a question, and to make it easier on members, Please state specifics about your subject, such as if you have a engine problem, tell us what engine you have, along with any other important information that we night need to help you, like what carburetor you have, if known. A picture is always helpful. Like the saying goes….a picture is like a 1000 words, also we may see something that might needs to be addressed. Believe me; it happens more often then you think. We know that there are those that are not that knowledgeable, or are mechanically challenged (unusually, PC correct :>), so there is not a stupid question, although I do think that sometimes there are some, so bear with me. Hey what do you expect with 50 years of wrenches in my hands, but we all had to start somewhere.

For those that are not knowledgeable on the terms of parts on a China 2 cycle (some are specific to these HT engines), here is a link that lists about every HT part. It is real hard for me to understand what a “thingy”, “whatcha ya call it” “thing of a jig” is.

I have a link in my signature that everyone starting out with a Chinese 2 cycle ought to read. Most are also included in many of the “stickies” This deals with pre installing a HT engine in the frame, engine not running correctly and more.

Once again, welcome to the world of MB’s, and have a safe, enjoyable riding experience.
Ron

What do you want to mount? Front mount, frame mount or a rack mount? The frame mount will be the least expensive. Kit for under $200.00.

Hi, thanks a lot, I really appreciate the links, those ones from your signature will help a lot! I'm looking to build a frame mount bike, 2 stroke, leaning towards the 66cc kits, but still looking at everything. Likely to try my luck at one of the ebay kits which i know is a bit of a gamble.

I like the looks of the bike from my first post (the AMF Skyrider) and might try sticking with the coaster brake with the addition of a front side pull brake. The only information i could really find on google for the bike itself is someone on a forum at bikeforums.net said that back in its day it was a cheaper bike, so I'm a bit concerned about its strength being old and called cheap.

Due to the bike's age I figure I will replace the chain, I know I need to take the wheel in to be trued but other than that is there anything I should look into further?

Just thought I'd close my question before anyone else invests their time into giving me any information they know about the bike. After adding up the cost of the AMF bike with getting breaks for it, a new seat, new chain, bringing the wheels in to be trued, and paint (it's all pretty rusty), I realized the total cost was only like ten dollars short of buying a new schwinn riverside from kmart. So I will be going that route.

Thanks again Ron for those links and all your advice.
