I thought this chart may help some new to M/b building to select a better chain.
Chain Strength & Dimensions

I'm REAL new to chains....could we get an edit on this sticky? Some [brackets] or |walls| or something to break this info up....maybe a key or some labels so a real noob like myself can study it. It looks like solid info, but I can't make heads or tails of it....

The chains that will work on a m/b are 410,415,415h,41. All being the same except the width between the sides, 410 being the narrowest at 1/8 inch. With 41 having the highest breaking point of standard chains.

Compare the kit chain with the chain on your bike, if it is the same width it is 410 if it is wider it is 415. 41 does not come in Chinese kits.

so, the 415 is not the same as 41, with bushings instead of rollers? 3/16 width & 1/4 for the 41? # 420 specs the same and higher strength. I want some dependability, as my "kit" chain only lasted 500 miles or so... Thanx for the chart! numbers make the difference!!!

I am planing to buy motorcycle sprocket for my build, it is used with #420 or #428 chain. Which one should I choose so that the chain fits with regular bicycle sprocket?

The bicycle sprocket uses .141 diameter barrels in the chain, I dont know if 420 or 428 will work. From what i have tried the 410, 415, 415h, and 41 are all that wil work on my ht engines. This is on the engine side sprocket. The pedal side chain on a single speed bike like mine is a 410.

i'm just curious why they supplied 420 chain with my kit.i tried 41,but it seems a little too wide for my liking.
im back to my garage door chain.
i guess i need to identify it.
least then i know what it is when i need more.

I was just opening a new thread when I saw this. My chain got crushed by the sprocket on the engine. Not sure exactly what happened but it looks to be as if 2 pieces were closer together than the rest of the chain.

I never realized that until I changed my sprocket from 44 to 34 couple days ago. I took it to a local store to take out 3 pieces and after a while it seemed to run smooth until last night when it would make sounds and pull weird on each rotation of the chain.

So now I saw that 2 pieces are messed up. Actually, let me take a picture of it real quick.

So here are my 2 questions:

- Whats the difference between the 410 and 415 chain and
- should I use a specific one for using the 34t sprocket?

If you look at the chart the width is the difference, 410 chain is the same size as single speed bike chain. 1/8 inch between side plates, 415 is 3/16 between, and 41 is 1/4 bp.

ah ok. and what are the reasons to use a wider chain? i already have problems with the badass tires i bought and now with the new sprocket to get the chain free from touching the rear tire, so i assume its 410 heavy duty for me to order. do i "need" anything different compared to stock just because i use a smaller sprocket?

The smaller sprocket puts more strain on the chain, you will need to pedal more on take off to keep from jerking on the engine chain due to lugging.

well my chain was just old as ****. i guess that gave it the rest. but with a new one it should be ok for a while. i dont pretent it to last years. i just changed the clutch pads and take offs are pretty much the same. i just put the energy softly on the clutch.
