I used to illuminate the living room with a 300 watt halogen outdoor fixture pointed up at the ceiling. Worked great, nice even bounce lighting. And I have a home theater system in there too, so it has to be dimmable.

But it uses 300 watts and the lamps don't last long. So I wired (56) 3 watt leds in series on a heavy sink with thermally conductive silicone adhesive.

Needed 2 power supplies, a high volt for the array and a low volt for the fan.

All went together good and it's been burning for 2 months now.

Same amount of light except I only use 90 watts now instead of 300. Dump less heat into the room too. The leds are are rated for 50,000 hours, so I shouldn't have to fix this thing for 12 years - :)
