Talk about blurring the line between bicycle, and motorcycles! I love it, wicked work man. One correction, that Honda clone mill is an OHC. The 1st Hondas were OHVs in the early 60's, by the mid 60's they were almost all OHC. Small detail, but I cut my teeth on those early ones. They are a great little engine. Are you going to post a video? Would love to see it run. Kudos.

I love the idea, but the pricetag shocks me considering a genuine Honda 125cc dirtbike can be had for less than a grand, a chinese pit bike clone for $4k with mountain bike wheels, fork, and bottom bracket is beyond what I would be willing to pay for the componentry involved to make a moped, of which can be bought new as well for about $1k.

In CA, these things would not be legal on trails and you'd still need to go to an OHV park. Set up with slick tires like a motard they would be excellent for the city though, and I plan to make myself one when I get the chance because I enjoy my little electric pit bike a lot and would love a gasser to go far with.

I'm in the process of building something similiar to this..using the same style jackshaft setup and a lifan/honda 50cc motor. Have the wheels and getting a rear hub made that mimmics Mot.opeds hub. Have the frame mocked up in a cad program I use but waiting on the rear hub to get here so that I can lay out the drive line and setup the engine to figure all my ride heights, etc. The frame will be 4130 chromoly and custom bent. Going more for a felt bike style frame look.(Beach cruiser frame with engine as low as possible)...Hopefully by the end of October I will have a mock frame setup and will post pictures. Really love watching everyone build up their bikes and giving me tons of ideas on how I can use little bits and pieces of other people's builds to see what does and doesn't work.

Motopeds, finally mass produced at an affordable price!!!

I can tell you that I don't work for Santa Cruz Motoped. I can tell you un-officially that they are still in business, and that they are still producing the Motoped kits to convert a pit bike / dirt bike, into an extreme mountain bike / motorized bicycle. The inventor / patent holder for this pedal / jackshaft assembly, a man by the name of Cameron Woods will be producing more Motopeds soon. Google search patents online you should be able to find the Motoped U.S. Patent # 7,753,157 with this patent number you may find a way to contact Cameron.

OK, here's the link for the Patent check it out maybe it has information you'll find useful in contacting Cameron:

Finally Kickstarter has helped, to make Motopeds affordable, checkout the Kickstarter plan here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2097071998/motopeds

I think there might be legal issues trying to ride such a bike as that on the street here in Texas without registration.

Sounds like a good deal, maybe I'll try to scrape together the cash for one this year. I like the design a lot, now that it's more affordable its within reach. It's really nothing like the Raven, more like my X-Games Motobike with 2 stroke engine. If you stuck an automatic pit bike engine on it I think you could reg it as a moped.

I've always wondered if you could use the semi-auto with the centrifugal clutch in it, and argue that every car's automatic transmission these days (and in the past really) has a means of manually selecting gears without a manual clutch and therefore are semi-auto.

If I was the judge I would rule that's legal, because no matter what gear it was in, it could still be ridden as fully automatic, because technically you don't ever have to shift when riding.
