so this is my understanding. when you pedal the bike and release the clutch the clutch pads grip the crank and turn the engine correct?

so if you pedal the bike and release the clutch and it doesnt catch on the engine(clutch slipping) does this mean it needs to be tightened?(clutch flower nut)

the engine turns over if you turn it by hand

Have you tried the basics, adjusting the clutch lever to the sweet spot along the cable, to where pedal power is available and clutch still grabs? Might need a pall or vise grips to hold it in place to tighten screw.
