I went to start my brand new engine and the handle slipped over the knot causing the rope to go inside the starter. I took the recoil starter apart and the long spring unwound in all directions! I was able to fix it right but now the spring will not recoil the rope after pull starting. The spring clip keeps coming off. Do I need to set more tension on it to keep the clips pulled tight?

middle of nowhere
well you have a few choices
1 toss the coil out the door smash it and cary some rope in your pocket to start it by rapping it arround the cooling fan (they are very tough)
2 fix the coil
first you have the spring all neetly wound in there
then put usualy the plactic peice that holds your rope on
spin it and tighten the spring underneath it ( 5-6 spins if you can do it
get a screwdriver to hold it in place while you place the rope on
i would buy new coil rope 4 it just as a precaution 5 ft of the stuff cost about 4 dollars
get it from a lawnmower shope
or just get 50 ft of nylon rope from walmart (untested by me)
put it in there (tight knot on the inside of the plastic flywhele but still compact so it don't catch.
pull out ur driver while holding onto rope
slowly let rope in
tie a large knot about 6in down from the tip of the rope so it don't get zaped in there again
tye your handle on
enjoy
i'de give u pictures of how i did this on a 6 or 8 hp coil
but its dark out
