Motorized bicycle kit tuning for beginner's

Hello all. I'm getting into my 3 third build and I'm starting to want to advance my skills. One of the things I want to do is tune my engines. I've done a little reading on Gordon Jennings masterpiece but its not setting in my head as I hoped. Is there any other books you use or could recommend? also what tools would you recommend a person living in a one bedroom apartment? Lastly what first mods would you do to a China doll? I appreciate any advice given as I'm not new to motorized bicycles but I am new to tuning engines and advanced repairs.

ok let me revise my question on tools. What tools do I need to do port work? I have most of the common tools to take my bikes apart as that was the first things but I am lacking things. I own a dermal but will that get into the ports far enough? what about calipers? or do I need a micrometer for measuring port width? (( I just bought a compression tester and hope to be using it with my engine right before I fire it up. ))
