Dear electric bikes enthusiasts

Some of you might have followed our adventures with the first edition of THE SUN TRIP solar bike rally. We are proud to announce that a second edition is in the making.

Created in 2013 with a central principle of freedom in mind, the Sun Trip gathers over 30 adventurers on solar bikes throughout Europe and into Central Asia. Freedom - in the choice of route and the rhythm of each adventurers but also in the design of the solar bikes.

The first edition went on between Savoy (France) and Astana (Kazakhstan). 31 started and 20 finished, 9 of them having only recharged with solar energy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TrHZAy4634 <---- Have a look at the bikes from 2013!

We have recently launched the second edition, planned for June 2015 and departing from Expo Milano 2015, arriving again in Astana, host of Expo 2017 with the theme Future Energy. A little more than 8000 km, including terrible unpaved tracks towards the end.

The Sun Trip wants to become a showcase for new forms of mobility combining human power and renewable energies. Each of the adventurers will be an ambassador for solar energy and eco-mobility. Young or old, experienced backpackers or novice travelers, the human interaction is a key element of Sun Trip’s concept. By striving for diversity, we prove that adventure is accessible to all.

The first Sun Trip experience in 2013 demonstrated that the solar bicycle is capable of sustained high speeds (averaging 200 km per day for the fastest participants), while at the same time allowing for a public who may be unfamiliar with sport and the spirit of competition to feel the joys and pleasures of a biking adventure.

Most of the participants for the 2015 Edition have already been selected, but some spots are still open. Find more information on the website: http://thesuntrip.com

Looks a lot more affordable than the solar car race in Australia. Appears most the entries are recumbent bikes.

Average budget per participant was about €10-12K, but most people (and bikes!) were already in Europe. Some of them already had eBikes or even solar bikes.

Here's the distribution of bike types, for a total of 28 bikes

10 straight bicycles
6 recumbent trikes
2 straght-recumbent tandems (with only one participant on them, the front seat being occupied by solar panels)
2 rear load cargo bikes
2 two-wheels recumbents
1 long-john cargobike
1 velomobile
1 straight tandem
1 two wheels recumbent tandem
1 sit-up custom tandem trike
1 handbike

We love variety :)

I had considered building a very simple, light solar electric assist bike a while back. No batteries. Just panels, regulator and 100w motor. I decided against it, because the sun is not very high when I commute in the morning and evening. It would still be fun for running errands in the afternoon.
