I didn't like the way the three speed shifted. It jerked even with backing off the throttle before shifting. I broke three bicycle chains before I switched to a #41 chain. It wasn't as smooth as the cassette.
That is disappointing to hear. I was hoping to go to a 3spd internal instead of a cassette. maybe if I go 5 or 7 it won't be too bad. Can't really afford a nuvinci.

I originally had an eight speed internal gear hub ordered. I waited about a month and it was always being pushed back a week or two, so I cancelled it. You are probably right thinking the more gears would be smoother as the gears would be closer together in ratio than just three gears. The least amount of jerk with the three speed was to shift it under power but I don't know how long it would last. You can get some good deals on the 7 and eight speed hubs now because I think they are now offering a nine ot ten speed internal hub.
