Possibly the worst thing you can do is let the chain run too loose. It would most likely come off and bind things up.

Second worst thing you could do is run the chain too tight. It'll strum, vibrate, and overheat and wear things out very fast.

IMO, cut un-necessary links from the chain to make a nice loop.
Then install the chain tensioner to take up whatever slack remaining, and leave 1/2" to an inch slack in the top part of the chain.

PJ-1 chainlube was just recommended to me at a MC shop.
