Has anyone ever put a mountain bike rear wheel on the front of a bike. The reason I ask is that I need a front wheel for a bike I am running and don't have one but I have two mtb rear wheels. I don't see why I couldn't put one of them on the front.

An additional benefit is that If I ever decided to mount an engine with a chain, I would already have the sprockets one of them might work.

There Is No Reason Why It Shouldnt Work . In Fact A Lot Of High-end Mountain Bikes Come With The Front Wheel With One Gear On It Incase Your Derailer Gets Screwed Up You Can Switch Your Wheels, If You Carry A Chain Braker To Adjust Chain Length With You. So Your Not Stuck On A Trail Pushing Your Bike Back . In Other Words Go For It,

maybe im reading the question wrong or am not understanding something but a rear mtb hub wont fit between the forks.

100mm is pretty much standard for front hub spacing on all bikes, 7spd rear mtb is 130mm and 8,9,10spd is 135mm.
