not "BAD" not "GOOD" just clean it up. do it every 6 months or so.. depending on how much u ride..=) just carbon.. dont scratch anything tho.. and dont drop it into the crankcase.. i usually use a plastic card.. works great chips right off. and dosent scratch the piston..
That just looks like the split in the ring that goes over the locating pin, each ring should have one.
When you compressed the rings to put the piston back in the cylinder, you did place those cutouts over the locator pin, right? That pin, BTW, is a lot smaller than I had imagined...

That is the ring 'gap'. All piston rings have them to allow the ring to be installed on the piston. Rings are springy so they seat tightly against the cylinder walls. They act as moving seals to provide compression.
As Maurtis said, those gaps must be aligned with the small pins protruding from the ring grooves before you can reinstall the piston in the cylinder. Trying to force the piston back in without aligning them with the pins and compressing the rings will result in broken rings, scratched cylinder walls and a complete top end rebuild.
Carefully examine the area we are talking about and you'll see how the rings line up with the pins and how they must be compressed (squeezed) to get the cylinder back down on the piston.
