I have an old electric chain saw, 1.5 peak HP 8 amp motor. I do know that AC motors are different from DC and that will most likely be my problem, but I was wondering what are the recommended specs for a base motor for a DIY electric bike? And what are the formulas for figuring watts and voltage and amps

Watts = Volts X Amps. I think it's 750 watts = 1 hp, so your 8 amp motor at 120V will produce 1.28 hp. You're correct, AC and DC motors are different. I don't know if you can use some sort of inverter/converter - jd

I did find that some motors are universal, I am hoping that mine is one such motor, but I have my doubts, it will be a week or so before I really start playing with it. Thanks for the info
