Everyone tells me I'm supposed to use 24:1. K?

So I ran out of gas :D on a trip and after asking about 10 houses if they had two stroke gas one guy did and he only had 40:1. So I was like what the heck I need to get home. I loaded that 40:1 in my bike and it ran so much better than the 24:1! I had increased RPMS, less vibrations, and more power.

So what's up with that? Will 40:1 work safely or even though I get better results will it ruin my engine? Why is 24:1 so choppy?

I like 32:1 with regular oil - synthetics can run with less but hard to tell how much as they are not all the same.

40:1 is fine, as long as the oil is formulated to be run at that ratio. Oil makers design their product to be mixed at certain fuel to oil ratios. Going too much below their recomendations could compromise the oil's ability to provide proper lubrication at engine operating temperatures.

You can safely run a 40:1 mix, if, the oil is meant to be used that way. Also you'll want to make sure the oil is made for air cooled engines. There is a difference in air cooled and water cooled (outboard boat engines).

Thanks Tom for that. Since I liked 40:1 I think I'll try crassius's idea of 32:1 and see how that works out.
You'll be happy with 32:1. Now you can see why we recommend avoiding the kit instructions that tell folks to mix at 16:1.

And then there are those weird-os, like me, who run 100:1. But that's with an oil made for that ratio. Don't try it with just any oil :)

I swear by 40:1 in ALL my two strokes. Have for decades.
Any modern decent oil is fine at 40:1 in the harshest conditions.
Just remember to keep the tuning on the rich side of max power if you're concerned about lubrication.
Mixture and state of tune has FAR more effect on engine life than running 40:1 will.

I run 50:1 Echo oil mix in all my 2 cycles.........no issues at all. My weed whacker is 8 years old and still runs and starts like new.

Best of luck in finding the best ratio for your situation.
