You can get VW head studs in 8x1.25, cut and thread the blank end 8x1. if that's what you need. Plenty strong, and long enough for extras.

Has anyone used VW case savers, or Timeserts on these engines? If so/not, why so/not? Thanks, H.

in some places, the surrounding metal is just too thin to allow much of an oversize, even with just a heli-coil, the metal is so badly fatigued from the original damage to hold the new threads well

I often suspect that chinese aluminum is an alloy of half pot metal.

Thanks C. I wouldn't be surprised about the purity of the metal in these cases. Does anyone live near a good scrapyard with a hand spectrometer? It would be interesting to find out for sure. H

They are cast from bubblegum tinfoil and beer can pull tabs with a tire thrown in for alloying.

They still have pull tabs? Aluminum beer can cut up in strips. I have used only to shim the clamp for the push button kill switch that was too large for my handle bar tube. Mostly heavy steel metal. I guess that's why I have the bike weighing 130 lbs.
