Where cattle outnumber people 3 to 1.
I went to New Holland Tractor Company and got a 5' length of #41 chain, 1 half link, and 2 master links.

Apparently they charge per link. 120 of them at 0.35 each, $42.00
One half link was $2.40
Two master links were $2.68

Total: $47.08, Aug-2013

That price is pretty nuts, it's been a while but I think I paid about $12 bucks for enough #41 chain to do two bikes... Amazon has plenty to choose from, I got mine through the AceHardWareStore on Amazon....

The next thing...

I felt ripped off by New Holland, so I decided to eat the restock charge of 25%.
I called to make sure that they even took back roller chain, and was told they would for a 40% restock fee. A little older and more patient now I asked, "Is that what you need to charge me today for this chain?" Presto. "What size was that, 41?, no, 10% for that one."
When I walk in the next day, I tell the fella behind the counter, so-and-so said 10%. He asks why I'm returning it, so I tell him. He asks why I didn't bring the master links, and I say because I had opened them. "That makes things easy", and hands me $42 cash, the full price of the chain.
I feel well treated by New Holland, and a little embarrassed that I didn't do more looking around.

I broke my chain breaker breaking the chain on my spare gas-bike. I went and got a better chain breaker, and bent it. I did get the length I needed to adjust my engine forward.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I used a center punch and hammer to push out a link to split the chain. I put the chain on a vise that was open just wide enough for the pin to fit in there but narrow enough to support the chain while I hammered it. I didn't push the pin all the way out, just far enough to break the link, then I hammered the pin back in to mend the chain without using a master link. I'm sure there's no problem using a master link on a #41 chain cause it's so heavy duty, but since I had so many failures with the master link on the kit chain I just decided to mend the chain and ride without one...

I don't own a chain breaker and I never grind the pins. I do what Nightcruiser does and use a punch just a little smaller diameter than the pin and drive them out. Instead of a bench vice I use a small socket under the side plate and drive the pin out just far enough to get the roller out. Reassembly is just a matter of reversing the process. I've never had a chain failure but I do use master links. Just make sure the clip is installed so the closed end enters the engine drive sprocket.
