Mountainbike and a Shift Kit

Hello,

Is it necessary to install a shift kit on a mountain bike? I understand that you dont have to install one but for performance and reliablity is the Shift Kit the way to go?

If not installed what are the symptoms that I should expect. With the shift kit what advantages are there?

Have not built the bike. But since it is going to be on the work station in pieces I dont mind taking the extra time to make it great.

I don't have a shift kit on my bike, though I would like one I find the standard 44t sprocket works fine. But if you are planning to go off road you will want to go with a bigger rear sprocket for more torque and slower speeds in the power band, I took my bike off road once with the 44t sprocket and it was scary the speed I had to maintain to not stall out the engine.
