Logical about the skis.
Soon as u turn the wheel prolly so much braking resistance you do a 360.
Guess that's a bad idea.
U saved me a hard lesson.

I only hope the studded tires work well.
Guess i'll get the Nokian Mount and Ground studded tires.
Local Bike shop has em for $65.00 Ea.

I been out there riding some more.
Not as bad on well Plowed Roads.
Still slippery though... Makes me a little nervous.

When that front tire goes out from under ya you go down before you know what happened. 0 time to react at all... and i was on edge expecting to fall.

I suppose with the tires the most dangerous part is being run over by a cager.

a centrifigual clutch would make things a bit more controllable powerwise.

combined with a pull start and you have starting and movement taken care of.

snow riding is going to be agressive, less weight on your person and no clutching will mean you can throw the bike around a bit, ride leg out like mxers do!

Picked up a cheap $12.00 Knobby tire at china mart.
2 boxes of #6 screws.
#6 X 3/8" sheet metal screws. (100 pcs)
#6 X 3/8" machine screws (100 pcs)
cost about $5.00 for the screws.

The sheet metal screws are pointy and the machine screws are flat.
Alternated screws every other tread.

All together i got about 180 screws in the front tire.
Pretty good length.
Stick out of the knobs just a little.
Figure they will wear down to the tire treads pretty quick on bare pavement.

Drill small hole through knobs to be studded.
Then flip tire inside out.
Put screws in.

Looks like this thing will climb a tree.
Can't wait to test it out in some snow.

Soon as i have $130.00 for tires i'll prolly buy the real ones.

But all in all this tire turned out pretty good.

For under $20.00.

nashbar.com has studded tires for way less (than the high dollar retail stores). The ski thing sounds like a really scary idea.
The hardware screw studded tire will probably work, but I think the metal will be soft, and with no locknuts, you may get snakebite flats.

what if you let a little air out of your tire, then wrap in a spiral fashon a small chain all the way around the tire and rim till you reach the place where you started. couple them togather with a locking link or very small lock, then inflate the tire up to pressere making the chain snug. Just a random thought. I moved away from snow a long time ago.

re: zip ties. PS this would nullify any rim braking option (instant endo or wheel lock and probably busted spokes)

re: chain wrapped around wheel. I suppose this could possibly work, but any benefits on ice would probably be paid for in blood the first time you rode on wet pavement. Also, it would surely chew up your rims quickly.
