Question- why don't you just get a new piston and ring, plus an exhaust from them? May be a lot cheaper and faster in the long run.

I was just thinking something similar: new cylinder, piston, ring combo, and new gaskets, and new muffler. $60. just to be safe. So that would work? I couldn't have damaged the crank or anything?

Nah. You may want to look inside or clean it out a bit if you find broken or missing pieces when you take it apart, but you'll be fine with replacement parts.

Take your time, clean everything well, and don't overtighten the nuts and bolts. Make sure you line the ring up on the piston with the ring alignment pin...you'll see it in the ring groove.
