just wondering if anybody has used say a small lawnmower gas tank wedged between the top tube and the bent lower tubes on a cruizer? I dont like the peanut tank look and i have it covered with a motorcycle tank but it sits too high(i cut the moto tank in half and it just sits over the peanut tank). Just thought this might work and then that way the moto tank sits lower. Also if you can get the fake tank sides that originally came with some of the old cruisers that would work too, you just have to bring extra gas with you because of the small tank. just a thought. I will go look at little itty bitty tanks today maybe and see what i come up with.

This community really REALLY needs a cost effective alternative to the gas tank that is supplied with the motor kits. Not just because we want something that looks better, but because of all the mounting lug weld seam failures (tank that came with my sons kit developed at leak and the replacement did to.

On the surface, injection molded plastic would seem to be the easy solution, but mounting could be an issue and I’m not sure how many paint colors are offered in plastic compatible finishes when it comes time to paint it.

Until the day arrives where we have a different tank available, here are some tanks or how to’s that I’ve found. Cut and paste if the links don’t work automatically.

Here’s a moped tank for $135 (same link has tank that mounts under a rear rack)

Here’s a round tank that I’d think you’d mount behind the seat

Here’s how to make your own tank out of fiberglass

One thing that puzzles me about the tanks with a channel on the bottom is how do you use all the gas without having fuel lines from each "lobe," if you get my meaning.

Well I found a source for aftermarket replacement 70's to 90's Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki dirt bike tanks. They are made of plastic at $218 they aren't cheap, but cheaper then some tanks I've found using is some builds here.

ive seen moped tanks that might work, but my problem is finding them here in mexico. I know there is a tiaguis(market) that sells all sorts of crazy stuff and i was told you can get lots of motorcycle stuff there so maybe soon i can get there (its in guadalajara which is a HUGE city and they drive like maniacs!) I still havent gone to the lawnmower guy yet, maybe in the next couple of days. It would be great if someone made plastic tanks to fit the frames, and then just put cool metal covers over them, just cheap stamped tin for looks.

Poncho,
Curtis Fox posted this link > http://www.choppersus.com/store/product/202/Tank-Dummy-Old-Sch-Fiberglass/ When I was planning the tank for my chopper. I had mine almost done by then so I didn't buy one but you might be interested. You could hide a peanut tank inside one and have a good looking tank. Just an idea.

Looks like they are out of stock right now but probably will have them soon.

I have a thread on alternative tanks. I'm using a very thick blow-molded plastic tank, mounted on the side of my Dax channel.

There are some other tanks that would work well (go-kart type tanks to fit on a rear rack).

I found one the other day, which could be mounted/strapped under a basic rear rack, with the filler neck coming through the rack. The common moped-type rear tank/racks are getting hard to find.

Wald Steel rack This rack is strong, and the tank can be mounted on top. You could cover it with some panniers or a fabric cover. You might even be able to paint it flat black with Krylon special purpose.
$10-15
