What has this all been like?
What has it become?
What is it still?

To sell gasoline
Glass Packs for small high mileage cars
You know, those "Less than a regular muffler" things
that are curiously most popular -and conspicuoil-us-ly-
most popular in urban areas
where they buzz around VERY LOUDLY
theatrically, and I could even attach a face and a name
to who most often seems to be a loud urban buzzer
but I won't lest you think I'm just being political
Always the HIGH MILEAGE cars,
The kind that don't sell as much gasoline

and always it seems just driven a bit more wrestlessly
Go to any auto parts store and search mufflers
and there- for smaller cars at least- they are
significantly cheaper and much more noisy
Turning mostly small foreign cars
into loud and obnoxious choice it would seem
to DISCOURAGE them

"those dang little NOISY foreign cars!
Think I'll get a nice quiet GM."

To sell more gasoline
and tweak some social unrest in certain areas
and tether the mules to their own hard labors
just a little bit more
Taxing the gas sales axing....
raising the GI Imperial gallon from some other over-fueled
hellish time whispered on the winds of rewritten records

.xx.

In the 70s I had an Austin Mini with a "Power Echo" exhaust system . You can't beat the sound of a small Brittish engine winding out . Give the new generation a break . Loud and showey is the new cool . .... D.J.

Since the dawn of time, noise has been equated to power. Folks who subscribe to this though will always find ways to express it. It just so happens that on many of today's cars, it results in a giant wet fart.

A lot of the little Asian compacts around here have those resonators, making them sound like little, foreign, fart-factories. I can't vouch for others, but for me it isn't so much the volume I find annoying as it is the tonal quality of the sound.

I heard an old Ferrari 275 once (only once, alas) and it's been long enough that I couldn't tell you if it was louder than these farters, but it sure sounded NICER. Whoa. I've been waiting to hear another Ferrari ever since. And I don't even want to own one - just hear it. I wouldn't care if it was louder.

These little cars don't even sound as cool as a Harley (and I've never been all too wild about Harleys - I'm an old Indian fan). So, I can kinda understand why so many people are annoyed with the boisterously belching rice cookers.

as a person who has had several "Fart Cannons" on cars, they are only worth a damn when you do some stuff to the motor and have a FULL exhaust, as in full custom exhaust, not full factory exhaust. my talon TSi had a full 3 inch stainless turbo back exhaust and sounded amazing, not like them raspy cans on stock hondas rolling around on cut springs
