is this a flywheel or what?

I'm using a 25cc weed eater motor (poulan). After removing the plastic casing and pull start, I see the drive shaft. But there is a disc at the base of the drive shaft that spins with the shaft. It has a magnet piece that rotates by a little black box. The black box has the spark plug wire coming out of it. So is this disc a part of the pull start or is it necessary for the engine to run. Removing it would give me an extra needed inch of drive shaft.

That is the magneto rotor (magnet). If you remove it the engine will not run. The magneto produces the ignition necessary to fire the spark plug. I'm not going into the details of how it works suffice it to say, no, you can't remove it.

Thank you. Logic told me that was probably the case. That leaves me with an unthreaded 8mm shaft that's only 1.25" long. There's only a square hole in the front where the weed eater cable connected. How in the world will I be able to connect a roller...

How about a sleeve as Ron stated and drill a hole in the shaft and attach the sleeve/roller to the shaft with a roll pin.

Here's an example I've found on Endless-sphere.com:

Granted, it's for an electric motor, but should still work for a 25cc weedeater.
