Narrow Cottered Crank Won't Fit My Kit

I bought a 66cc motor kit and fit it on my bike. Unfortunately my cranks are too narrow and cannot fit the kit in and have my crank be able to pedal. So I originally raised the engine above the crank arms but the engine would vibrate like he** because it wasn't securely positioned. I then decided to replace the cranks which, to make things even worse, are cottered. So I was wondering if anyone has converted their bike from narrow cottered cranks to wide cotterless cranks in order to fit their kit in and be able to pedal freely. I would like some advice on the subject.

I am also thinking about starting from scratch with another bike. My current bike is a 1970s road bike. I am thinking about getting a new mountain bike for the build anyone know where I can get a cheap frame?
