Hi I'm back after building 3 motor bikes and selling them
I'm on a forth...and this one Runs, but when I release
the Throttle, the engine quits. The Throttle cable is snug
and installed right, any throttle play is minimal. I see a
screw with a spring on the carb. is that an Idle adjustment screw.
I need to get this squared up...My guess is that when I release
the throttle its cutting off the gas, or the idle is too low so it wont
idle...Help
thanks

this should help if you're using a cns which i think you are. anyways i found with my carb that i could get it to idle, it idled great in fact.

but even when i got it to idle perfectly, it didn't run nearly as well as it had before. so i took performance over being able to idle.

my advice is set your c clip on your carb up to the right setting so you get a good clean burn and set the carb to run its fastest rather then idle, the idling hasn't really bothered me yet and i feel the performance gain was worth it.

if it's a customers bike, ask em what they would prefer.

make sure your pull-slide for the fuel is seated properly in the carb'... there's a lil' clip it rides on- if you put it in wrong it gets "funny", i.e.; the first build I did, as soon as she started, -she got stuck t.w.o!!!!
...with an entire set of bearings missing on the rear wheel, 'cause I was in a hurry! --THAT WAS FUN! HA!

The Carb is from a BGF black engine....center cable pull style
by c-clip I suppose you mean the carb adjustment screw [screw on left side
with little spring on it that moves in either direction]?

what scares me is you've built and sold 3 bikes already, and you have no idea what an idle screw or a c-clip is.

i could say "no offense" after that, but i don't think you'd believe me.

you really should do some research into what you're building and selling. for the sake of your customers, yourself, and motorbicycling in general.

i'm really not trying to be a jerk about it, but i can imagine a customer coming back with a problem you can't fix because you don't understand it. i mean, could you imagine buying a car from a dealer, only to be told later that "i think it might be this metal thing over here, but i'm not sure what it is or what it does..."

and i do find it a bit insulting that you're making money off this "hobby," and then coming here for free advice. too bad we couldn't charge you a consulting fee.

I was thinking the same thing, but I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

captainmorse;bairdco is right. if your selling these bikes i hope your insured because when someone gets hurt or killed on the bike you made and sold you will hear from the police or an attorney. i guess your young because if your living on your 4 bike money you ought to be pretty hungry. these kits are one step above mini bikes but stuck throttles and bad brakes don't mix! and if you dont know the simplest carb i've seen on a motor i hope you know about bikes [i know motorcycles but not that much about bicycles and their is a difference] build them like your mom's riding them and remember people die everyday falling off step ladders, not that far down

Gentlemen.....Some Clearifying NEEDS to be done here
and I AM offended.
I have spent my life time Rebuilding and Repairing
Motorcycles and I surely DO know what an Idle screw or C-clip is. I built 3 bikes....rode them a while.....enjoyed them, and then sold 2 of them to 2 aquaintances who saw and really wanted it. Cheap....meaning I break even...enough to buy another bike and motor. I own 2 bikes. I am NOT being comercial in this. All other bikes, I have built and not had any problems except for one that had over tightened screws on the Clutch cover. This one is the first bike that I have problems with as far as the idle is concerned...it runs and when I release the throttle it simply shuts off....I turned the Idle Screw and no effect.
As for legalities, I sold the TWO bikes used as is. NO Warrenties NO conditions, AS IS. Similar to selling my used car, or bicycle or lawnmower. I am retired...and next to fishing, this is my hobby.
I do NOT appreciate anyone who does not know me or anything about me
or what I am or do, pounce on my ass and flame me. Obviously you have
no further help here except assume things and jump on people...so
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME and for Wasting Mine....I"LL FIGURE IT OUT ON MY OWN.

without personally knowing someone from the internet, all anyone can do is judge a person by the words they type.

from your original post, the impression i (and others) got was of a newbie building and selling bikes, with no understanding of the basics.

try reading your own post and pretend it was from someone you never met before.

in all honesty, it sounds to me like a guy trying to jump on the motorbike bandwagon, without even pitching in for gas.

if i was wrong? hey, i'm sorry. didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

i try to help and answer people's questions all the time, from the most obviously simple (to me) to the totally perplexing. the way you worded your problem, it just kinda set me off. it's really hard for me to believe that you've never had to adjust the idle on the first three bikes. that is the most basic, and usually first thing that needs to be done to a bike (and every other engine) after you start it the first time.

so to not know what it is, what it does, etc, that's like a guy who built three houses not knowing how to unlock the door...

If the apology is authentic then i accept...and we leave it behind....water under the bridge.
Honestly...In my life I only had to deal with Idle Screws..be it on cars, motorcycles, boats,or in this case Moter bicyles. As for C-Clip...forgive me
I never heard of one...I'm more than sure I have seen or dealt with one in my
day but just never heard one called such. I've seen my uncle who is totally self learned like a whiz, take a Truck Tranny apart and fix it and put it together, and not know the names of many of the parts...Me? Like my uncle and many people, I'm self taught
....I get to learn the name of parts as I go along ordering them or whatever.
C-Clip? never heard that name....but thats just me. And now i'm going to go and look it up and find out.
I did not say I did not adjust idle in three bikes....I have as that is the
golden rule with any engine I ever dealt with, unless of course its computer monitored....I said that when I adjust the idle on this last bike, there is no effect. Meaning that it seems to me that when I release the throttle it just
stops. While riding it its fine until I let the Throttle back to its stop point then
the engine stops. I have adjusted the cables and actions of the throttle and cable as it should be. Its almost like it chokes out gas starves...the Idle screw
even turned to its highest point has no effect on the engine shutting off.
Bairdco I can appreciate what you are saying and its great that you take the
time to share your knowlege of these things with others....quite honestly? These engines are of the simplest form, and CHEAPLY made. BGF...sends out the kits and beyond that you are on your own.
Thank you for your help

Ok...Problem fixed....running good.
it was in the adjustment in the Throttle grip. They must have changed the
Throttles that they send as this one looks more like a Motorcycle throttle grip...totally different than the other bike kits I had. It required I snug up the Cable a bit more beyond the norm with the nuts at the Throttle. I placed a small spacer washer between the nut and the cable sleeve and it solved the problem. Thank you all for your help.

Didn't ricky send you a PDF of the instructions? I got it when I ordered but truly is a very basic primer. You get more and better info here and on youtube, once you filter out the crap ;)

p.s.: I tried to link to better instructions on a sponsor's site but it infected my computer. It was sending it's porno package to everyone on my email contact list and I had to delete the whole thing to clean it up :p

...so it's not just porn sites that can mess up a computer.

Hi Dave C.
Man you cant be too carefull about those viruses. About 6 months ago
I logged into a Music site and ended up with a Porn Virus...this one
got into my emails sending it out to all contact on my list, and then the
next day when I booted my computer, It loaded up adn showed a bunch of
Worms screwing in various positions all across my desktop...it took some doing
to delete and get rid of it. Now I have a better Virus Protector and Firewall.
which seems to catch them before they enter and do damage. The important
thing is always make sure you Manually update you VP to the latest Virus
Definitions, or your VP can miss a newly made virus.
As for the Carb situation, it seems that the Throttle adjust ment was all that
needed to be made...what I found crazy was that I had to turn the nut almost to the end of the threading...Which is why I inserted a washer/Spacer
between nut and cable which gave me more room and thread to play with.
In order to do this you need to cut a small slot on one side of the Spacer...
Just large enough to allow the center cable wire to slip inside the spacer.
The force of the nut against it will hold it in place. Its a little trick I learned for myself while working on Motorcycles..flg.(c)

Captainmorse, and everyone else.
Hello !!!!!
I just read through everyting, and I have seen this, and been involved in situations just like this on other forums. Yes, a person is judged by what they type, or even how they spell, and so much is lost or mistaken when typing/reading. I am just glad that everyone was able to work this out, and a carb problem was resolved.

I have been asked to build bikes for people who like mine, and my answer has been "No, but I will give you all the guidence you need during your own build."

At least your fix, is posted here for someone who might need it in the future. Cuz who know what people will encounter with these little engines.

Hi Mr Gadget
Yes I agree...I for one need to be a bit more cognizant to what and how
I write it. All Better to avoid misinterpretations of it all. As could be seen.
Your Ideology of instead of building a motobike for someone guide them as
they build it themselves...lends itself to an old adage I learned many years
ago and follow it to this day. "Buy and man a fish and feed him for a day....
Teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime"..flg.

Thanks Captainmorse,
I have been given the name Mr.Gadget because of who I am. I did not create it for myself. People who can solve their own problems have the most respect from me,,,, but there is nothing wrong with asking for help when one needs it.
"Teach them to fish" Thats what I am all about. I think people in general these days are to dependent on paying someone to do it for them. My kids helped build our bikes, and can answer and trouble shoot problems, and answer the 20 questions game at Wally-world when we ride there. Their age is young, and the surprise in peoples faces shows respect to the kids, and a spark of "Maybe I can do this myself" I like that.
Enjoy, have fun, and be safe.

I'm with u bairdco. If someone has built more than 2 bikes, and doesn't know what an idle screw is...u don't need to be doing more for people until u know what all the parts are, and their function
