it's a nice design for a motor that doesn't have the muffler right in front of that cover, but if changing mufflers isn't wanted, then maybe a curved piece of sheet metal could be attached to front of that cover with a bit of a gap to block heat from muffler flowing past

Well! Turns out that it wasn't my CDI at all. The clutch pads got a little greasy. I sprayed some brake cleaner on them and it fired right up! I didn't even think to check the condition of the pads until today. Shame on me.

I appreciate the help. I do believe that I will drill that hole and create some kind of heat deflector for it, anyway. Up to now I have only been running it for about a half-hour at a time but, want to start going on much longer rides.
